How I became a Reading Specialist

While doing my Bachelor in Education at the University of the West Indies, majoring in Educational Administration, one of my final year courses involved Reading with Dr. Mc.Dowell. I found this course to be useful, interesting and thus excelled in this area. Coincidentally, my school was underperforming and I felt that Reading was the source of this problem. I thus decided to do my practicum in Reading and was motivated by the feedback given to me both by my lecturers as well as fellow teachers. I decided that furthering my studies in the teaching of Reading was something that I wished to pursue so I began to look around to see what was available. However, nothing was within my budget, so I began a Masters in Curriculum Studies. Halfway through the programme, I saw an advertisement in the local newspapers, making the first ever Masters Degree in Reading available at the University of the West Indies. I thus grabbed the opportunity to become a reading Specialist in order to help the "weak" readers in my school and also in the wider community.
